Drinking culture in Illinois:
21% Illinois residents admitted to heavily drinking at least one time in the past 30 days. Each of them drinking an average of 7 drinks on that night. People in Illinois love to drink. More specifically, Chicago is home to some great festivals and bars. For example, the Chicago St. Patrick’s Day Parade. The streets are crowded with people getting wild and of course, drinking. The water is dyed green in celebration with drunks on the street as far as the eye can see.
Illinois state laws:
Illinois has some relatively loose drinking laws. Allowing residents to purchase alcohol from 9 am to 2 am on premise, or 7 am to 10 pm on premise. So, if you’re going out on a weekday, you might have to cut it short or plan accordingly. However, on the weekends, on premise sales is extended from 9 am to 2 am. Carrying an open container of alcohol in public places in Illinois will result in a fine. If you have an open beer or an opened wine bottle in your passenger seat, you can be arrested, no matter if you have consumed any or not. So don’t allow any of your friends to have any roadies or you may be facing consequences at no fault of your own.
History of drinking in Illinois:
After 1933 and the end of prohibition, there was an interesting law in Illinois prohibiting sale based on age. Males had to be 21 to drink. However, females only had to be 18. The idea behind this fascinating law was that women matured faster than men, and typically were marrying earlier than men. This was ultimately overturned in the early 60s to limit both genders to 21 and older. After the passage of the 26th amendment, which lowered the legal voting age from 21 to 18, Illinois again investigated their minimum drinking age. In the 80s, Illinois decided to allow those 19 years and older to purchase alcohol once again. However, this was once more overturned by the National Minimum Drinking Age Act, which leveraged highway funding to force all 50 states into increasing their drinking age to 21. Needless to say, Illinois has had quite an uncertainty when it comes to alcohol.

2. The Green Mill
An extremely popular bar with great brews on tap. This place often has live music playing and has a great atmosphere.
3. Society 2201
Looking for something a little livelier? Check out this vibrant night club. Great drinks with a very active dancefloor. We recommend you check this place out for something more exciting.
Where to stay away from?
1. Underground
This nightclub is crowded and overpriced. The bouncers are overbearing, and the waiters are rude. Despite having some great live music, this place has more downs than ups and we recommend you stay away.
2. Illinois Bar & Grill
This franchise has bitten off more than it can chew and has dropped in quality considerably over the years. The food isn’t great, and the beer is overpriced. They often don’t have every draft in stock and overall have poor service.
